LANDSCAPES & CAVES

Small villages, breathtaking panoramas, archeological and mining sites in one only tour! Our special tour to the area of the Pisan hills shows you three unknown destinations: Chianni, Rivalto and Montecatini Valdicecina.

Chianni & Rivalto
The tour starts with the meeting of our experienced local guide in the village of Chianni. During a fascinating walk among the narrow lanes of this medieval village, you will get to know a lot of anectodes and interesting facts on the former small community of farmers. While enjoying spectacular landscapes, your guide will lead you through the center of the village, with several stops at the local butcher’s and baker’s, for you to taste some delicacies of the place. The tour continues with an archaeological focus on the Etruscan hypogeum and the fascinating water mills that used to run by the side of the village, in a sort of pre-industrial production area.
The guided tour includes also a stop in the stunning Rivalto, the highest place of the whole rural area, from which the views extend to all Tuscany!

The mining museum in Montecatini Valdicecina
The mining industry in the Upper Val di Cecina has always been a major local activity. A Mining Museum in Montecatini Valdicecina shows the history of copper extraction from 1827 to 1907. The visit to the museum starts with a historical introduction to the complex and then goes through the explanation of the extraction techniques and the machinery employed. Probably the most fascinating part of the visit is the walk into the digging tunnels. You can also admire a large collection of original documents of the mining enterprise such as working programmes, pay-rolls and registers as well as outlines of the galleries and plans of the mines.

After this tour, the whole area of the Pisan hills will have another meaning for you!

This is a list of specialties that you are likely to sample as part of the program of this tour. Please, note that the specialties of the tasting session and/or lunch may vary according to the season and the availability of the products in the day of the tour.
