THE MAGIC ATMOSPHERE OF THE ETRUSCAN HILLS IN TUSCANY

Arianna & Friends organizes a fantastic full-day shore excursion from Livorno to a spectacular rural area of Tuscany around the historical town Volterra with a visit to a unique organic cheese farm.

Here the outline:

- Private transfer by minivan or minibus from the port of Livorno. Our English speaking tour leader meets you directly at the ship in the morning at your convenience and stays with you for the whole day. The tour leader gives you an interesting introduction to the region Tuscany, its uses, facts and history, while reaching the place. French, German, Russian, Spanish and Italian are also possible.

- In about 1 hour driving we reach the fantastic setting of an organic cheese farm in the area of the Pisan hills. It is a genuine and authentic place with the typical atmosphere of working farm, where you can meet sheep, horses, donkeys, piglets as well as cats and dogs in real.

- The visit to the organic farm takes about 2 hours starting with an inspection into the dairy to see how aged pecorinos and fresh ricottas are made. Different kinds of cheese are produced according to season and the avilability of fresh sheep milk.

- After seeing the cheese production, we walk to the sheep shed and see the lamb nursery and the milking facility. The experience aims at showing visitors how the integrated cycle of an organic farm works, from the grass in the fields to the aged cheese on the table. Before getting to the restaurant we also pet the donkey Orazio and the other animals on the farm.

- Finally we sit at the restaurant for a lunch based on excellent pecorino cheeses and locally produced hams and salamis!

- After lunch we move to the Etruscan town Volterra, only 10 minutes far. The 2,000-years-old town has got treasures from the Etruscan times as well as from the Roman domination and the medieval era.
In Volterra we meet a city guide and walk through the old town stopping at the major monuments and panoramic places: the magnificent Piazza dei Priori, the roman theater, the Medicean fortress , the Etruscan city walls and a lot of other treasures.

- Before getting back to Livorno, there is some free time in Volterra for a gelato or for some shopping, especially while visiting the shops of locally produced alabaster goods.

- Driving back to Livorno we take a road passing near to the famous cliffs "Le Balze", a precipice formed by an erosion phenomenon of a hill through the milleniums. We arrive in Livorno within the early evening, depending on the docking time of your cruiseship.
